Man jailed 6 months for mysteriously escaping from detention

A middle-aged man, Taye Isaac, was yesterday sentenced to six months imprisonment by a Chief Magistrate’s Court, sitting in Akure, Ondo State. The court, presided over by Chief Magistrate Sunday Adedapo, however, ordered the accused to pay N20,000 fine as an option. Isaac was arrested for hitting the head of one Sunday Akinola with a bottle during a fight. After his arrest and detention in police custody, the accused person mysteriously escaped. However, he was later rearrested and charged to court.

According to the police prosecutor, Pelumi Adejuwon, the offence was contrary to and punishable under Section 135(a) of the Criminal Code 37Vol. Laws of the Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

Isaac pleaded guilty to the offence, while the police prosecutor tendered the statement written by the accused person to the court as an exhibit.

Counsel to the accused person, Mrs Grace Obanigba, appealed to court to be lenient in its verdict for the fact that the Isaac had confessed to the offence and did not waste the court’s time.
