A community came together to show support to a firefighter, who lost his home because he chose to volunteer his time to help others.
Kenneth Walker, 28, of New York, told police that he found a racist letter in his mailbox, threatening him.
In the letter, the suspect referred to Walker using the N word and ordered him to resign from the North Tonawanda fire department.
The suspect threatened that if he does not resign, “he will regret it.”
The letter read: “N*****s are not allowed to be firefighters. No one wants you in this city. You have until the end of the week to resign your position or you will regret it. N****r.”
Sadly, the person acted on his threat and two days after receiving the letter, Walker’s house was set on fire.
Walker is the only black firefighter in the department. He is a volunteer and does not get paid for helping others in need.
Walker said that he and his wife were at work at the time, and his children were not home so they were all safe.
However, the family is mourning the loss of their two cats that were killed in the blaze as no one was home to rescue the animals.
Police are now investigating the incident, and they are looking for the person who wrote the threatening and racist letter.
A GoFundMe page was setup to help Walker get back on his feet. The goal was to collect $25,000 and he already received $30,480 in donations so far.
