Woman shoots and kills her friend who stopped by for surprise visit after mistaking him for intruder

 A woman was left brokenhearted over the death of her good friend, who she shot dead after mistaking him for an intruder.

The 51-year-old woman of New Jersey, who has not been named, was on the phone with her male friend, who was away on a business trip.

The friend, 50-year-old Kelvin Watford, told the woman that he was on his way back, but that he was not yet in the area.

While she was talking to Watford, the woman heard a dog noise outside of her Mercer County home. She went to her bedroom to grab her gun.

As she came out of the room at around 11:20 p.m., the woman saw someone at the bottom of the stairs inside her home. She fired one shot and hit the victim in the chest.

The woman called police to report the intruder. When officers arrived, they found Watford lying at the bottom of the stairs with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are still investigating the incident, but so far, officers believe that the incident was a tragic accident and the woman was not arrested.

Watford left behind four children and several grandchildren.
