A baby lost her life after her mother left her home alone in order to go on an all night drinking binge, according to police in South Africa.
Johannesburg police said that they have arrested the 26-year-old woman, who was not identified, after her 3-month-old daughter was eaten alive by giant rats.
The woman has been charged with child neglect. According to the police investigation, the woman had twins, a boy and a girl, three months ago.
The 28-year-old father of the twins, left the mother of the children and went to live with his new girlfriend. On Friday, the woman brought the boy to the father and left the girl in the home.
She then went on an all night drinking binge with her new boyfriend. When she returned home on Saturday around 6:30 a.m., the girl was dead.
Police confirmed that the mother had been arrested and said she had apparently been drinking all night. Police also confirmed that the child died after being eaten by rats.
The child’s tongue, eyes, and fingers had been eaten. In addition to the missing limbs, her body had bites and wounds that were inflicted by the sharp teeth of the rats.
