Higher Education: Total Number Of Students Approaches 110 Thousand In 2021-2022 Academic Year

In the country where 22 higher education institutions operate, including the Atatürk Teacher Academy, the total number of students in universities in the 2021-2022 academic year approached 110 thousand.

According to the Ministry of National Education, when we look at the figures of the last 4 years, while the number of TRNC and foreign students has increased, there has been a decrease in the number of Turkish national students.

When the 2018-2019 and 2021-2022 academic years were compared, there was a more than twofold increase in the number of newly registered foreign students. the number of newly registered foreign students increased from 6 thousand 185 to 12 thousand 907.

The Higher Education and Foreign Relations Department of the Ministry of National Education prepared a booklet introducing 22 higher education institutions within the scope of the “Student Friendly Island” project.

In the booklet, which contains information about the universities carrying out educational activities in the north of Cyprus and the Atatürk Teacher Academy, statistical information of the last four years was also included. 

Figures from the last 4 years

In the last four years, there has been an increase in TRNC and foreign students studying in higher education institutions, while there has been a decrease in Turkish students.

The number of TRNC students was recorded as 12 thousand 508 in the 2018-2019 period, 12 thousand 255 in the 2019-2020 period, 13 thousand 427 in the 2020-2021 period and 13 thousand 914 in the 2021-2022 period.

While the number of Turkish students was 54 thousand 875 in the 2018-2019 period, this number decreased to 50 thousand 274 in the 2019-2020 period, to 46 thousand 561 in the 2020-2021 period, and to 43 thousand 101 in the 2021-2022 period.

On the other hand, the number of foreign students, which was 35 thousand 318 in the 2018-2019 period, increased to 41 thousand 349 in the 2019-2020 period, to 43 thousand 120 in the 2020-2021 period and to 51 thousand 280 in the 2021-2022 period. 

There was a decrease in the number of Turkish students

According to the figures of the last 4 years, the number of TRNC students, which was 12 thousand 508, increased to 13 thousand 914, while the number of foreign students, which was 35 thousand 318, reached 51 thousand 280. On the other hand, the number of Turkish students decreased from 54 thousand 875 to 43 thousand 101. 

Number of newly registered students

According to the new registration data, 3 thousand 51 TRNC students in the 2018-2019 period, 2 thousand 884 in the 2019-2020 period, 3 thousand 365 in the 2020-2021 period, 3 thousand 592 TRNC students in the 2021-2022 period enrolled in the universities.

While the number of newly registered students with Turkish nationality was 11 thousand 564 in the 2018-2019 period, this number decreased to 10 thousand 200 in the 2019-2020 period. The number increased to 11 thousand 574 in the 2020-2021 period and decreased to 10 thousand 148 in the 2021-2022 period.

While the number of newly registered foreign students was 6 thousand 185 in the 2018-2019 period, this number decreased to 8 thousand 783 in the 2019-2020 period and 7 thousand 749 in the 2020-2021 period.

Two-fold increase in newly registered foreign students

In the last 4 years, the number of newly registered students of TRNC nationality increased from 3 thousand 51 to 3 thousand 592, while this number decreased from 11 thousand 564 to 10 thousand 148 in Turkish national students. The number of newly registered foreign students increased more than twice, from 6,185 to 12,907. 

The total number of students approached 110 thousand

The total number of students was recorded as 102 thousand 701 in the 2018-2019 period, 103 thousand 878 in the 2019-2020 period, 103 thousand 108 in the 2020-2021 period and 108 thousand 295 in the 2021-2022 period.

The 22 higher education institutions operating in the north of Cyprus and the years they have been active are as follows:
