Drunk driver arrested for traffic accident rearraigned, detention extended

The suspect AJO, who had an accident by colliding with the pedestrian under the influence of alcohol, was brought before the court again.

Police sergeant Ozan Avcı, who gave sworn testimony in the court, arrived in front of Kolan Hospital while the suspect was driving fast and carelessly in his rental car with license plate ZMY 147 under the influence of 93 milligrams of alcoholic drink on Atatürk Caddesi in Gönyeli at around 03:20 on September 8.

He explained that he had hit 19-year-old Ozan Polat, a resident of Nicosia, with the front of his vehicle, who was arguing verbally with unknown people who were taxi customers on the road.

The police stated that after the impact, Polat was thrown 40 meters and fell into the road.

Ozan Polat, who was seriously injured as a result of the accident, was taken to Nicosia by ambulance. He reminded that he was taken to the Emergency Service at Dr. Burhan Nalbantoğlu State Hospital, operated on with the diagnosis of skull fracture and cerebral hemorrhage, and taken under observation in the Intensive Care Service.

The police said that Polat had a second operation due to the reoccurrence of the cerebral hemorrhage. He said his condition was critical.

The police stated that the suspect, the driver of the vehicle with license plate ZMY 147, fled the scene of the accident with the vehicle in question, without leaving his name and address, and that the accident driver of the vehicle, AJO, on Fuat Mustafa Street at 04.50 on the same day, was detected next to the vehicle and red-handedly arrested.

The police said that there was an estimated damage of 50 thousand TL to the vehicle with license plate ZMY 147.

The police said that it was necessary to investigate and confirm whether the suspect was driving the vehicle.

The police stated that the investigation has just started, there are statements to be taken and camera footage to be examined.

The police also stated that it will be investigated whether the driver himself drove the vehicle during the accident, and that the suspect did not give any voluntary statement on this matter, but only made a statement that he had driven the vehicle himself.

The police also stated that an investigation will be carried out regarding the identities of the 3 unknown persons who were arguing with Ozan Polat on the road at the time of the accident, and that there are suspicions that this incident may have occurred by pushing the pedestrian Ozan Polat in front of the suspect’s vehicle, knowingly or unknowingly, during the discussion.

The police said that time is needed for the identification of 3 unknown persons who left the scene.

The police also stated that the suspect came to the TRNC to register as a student on March 09, 2021, but has been in the TRNC for 488 days without a residence permit.

He will be detained for another 5 days.

Considering that the course of the matter is likely to change in the light of all these facts, the police demanded that the suspect be kept in police custody for 5 days for the sake of the investigation.

Evaluating the testimony given in his presence, Judge Nil Elodie Govsa ordered the suspect to be detained for 5 days.
