Violence against women, one of the most severe consequences of gender inequality, is an important problem in the world, and it is increasingly besieging women’s lives in Northern Cyprus.
It has been determined that there has been an increase in the data of ‘official violence’ against women in the last 7 months to the Nicosia Police Department. Police announced that a total of 656 incidents have been reported to them in the last 7 months.
While it was reflected in the data that 268 women were battered in January-August 2022, it was recorded that the number of women who were subjected to sexual assault was 3, while the number of women who were subjected to sexual harassment reached 13.
While the increase in violence against women in Northern Cyprus is reflected in the data, it is also reflected in the police data that the size and form of violence has changed.
According to the data obtained from the Nicosia Police Department, 268 women were battered in the last 7 months.
According to the data, 656 reports were made to the police for the crimes of ‘physical violence’, ‘threat’, and ‘inconvenience’.
According to January-August data, a total of 268 women, 84 women in Nicosia, 82 women in Famagusta, 67 women in Kyrenia, 16 women in Güzelyurt and 19 women in İskele, were subjected to male violence.
According to the police data, it was stated that 6 women in Nicosia, 6 women in Famagusta, 7 women in Kyrenia and 3 women in Güzelyurt were exposed to the issues of “sexual assault”, “sexual harassment” and “sexual rape”.

While 268 women were subjected to ‘beating and physical violence’ in a 7-month period, 50 women were victims of ‘insulting messages on the phone’. Across the country, 20 women complained to the police for being ‘disturbed’.
It was stated that Nicosia was the region where the threat of violence was experienced the most.
According to the data, it was stated that a total of 38 women, 14 in Nicosia, 8 in Famagusta, 7 in Kyrenia, 5 in Güzelyurt, and 4 in Pier, applied to the police and were recorded.
The police noted that 155 women who were subjected to male violence did not testify to the police about the events.
Accordingly, it was reported that a total of 155 women did not testify, including 62 in Nicosia, 49 in Famagusta, 31 in Kyrenia, 4 in Güzelyurt, and 9 in İskele.
In Northern Cyprus, it was mentioned that there are 27 people who committed threatening and disturbing crimes (Contrary to Electronic Communications Law) on their social media accounts.
There were 27 incidents in total, 6 in Nicosia, 10 in Famagusta, 8 in Girne, 3 in Güzelyurt and 0 in İskele.
In the period covering the January-August period, a total of 6 incidents related to ‘injury’ and ‘theft’ occurred, 2 in Nicosia, 3 in Kyrenia, and 1 in Iskele.
It was determined that the number of those who committed the crimes of “violating the privacy of private life” was 14.
It is seen that the number of women who have been subjected to sexual violence in Northern Cyprus is at an alarming level.
According to the data, the number of women who were subjected to ‘sexual rape’ was recorded as being raped by a total of 6 women, including 1 in Nicosia, 3 in Famagusta, and 2 in Kyrenia, while the ‘forced abduction’ incident occurred 3 times in Nicosia. .
Due to the disagreement, the fights between the couples in public places occurred 2 times in Nicosia, 1 in Famagusta, and 1 in İskele. It happened 4 times in total.
According to the data of the Nicosia Police Department, the number of those who did not comply with the court order reached 17, 4 in Nicosia, 4 in Famagusta, 3 in Kyrenia, 4 in Güzelyurt, and 2 on the pier.
A total of 11 incidents, 1 in Nicosia, 6 in Famagusta, 2 in Kyrenia, and 2 on the pier, were reported to the police regarding the ‘cursing in public’ incidents that occurred for various reasons.
Regarding the ‘deliberate damage’ issue, the police stated that there were 4 incidents in Nicosia, 4 incidents in Famagusta, 0 incidents in Kyrenia, 2 incidents in Güzelyurt, 1 incident in İskele, and a total of 11 incidents.
While it is recorded that there has been an increase in the crimes of ‘treason encroachment’ across the country, the highest number of incidents occurred in Kyrenia.
According to the data, the total number of cases that occurred in Nicosia 1, Famagusta 1, Kyrenia 4, Güzelyurt 0, iskele 1 were recorded as 7.
According to the data, the ‘grave damage’ issue was recorded with 3 cases in Güzelyurt and İskele.
