TRNC population is approximately 391 thousand – Statistical Institute

The Statistical Institute calculated the population of the country as 391 thousand based on annual statistics. According to the data, the birth rate has fallen and life expectancy has risen. Divorces increased exponentially.

The TRNC Statistical Institute published a population and demographic bulletin covering the years 1977-2021.

Population and population structure, birth statistics and fertility, death statistics and mortality in the bulletin prepared by the Institution using the information contained in the Statistical Annuals and Economic and Social Indicators published since 1977. Causes of death kept projection on issues such as marriages and divorces.

The population of the country, which was determined as 286 thousand 257 in the census made on December 4, 2011, was calculated as 391 thousand according to the 2021 year-end projection.

In the bulletin, population pyramids were also included, and it was seen that the female/male ratios in the total population were close to each other until 1996 (female 50.4 percent male 49.6 percent in 1995), and after the first comprehensive census in 1996, the difference between gender distributions began to change and it was emphasized that the number of men showed a higher increase than women.

While the gender distribution was 52.8 percent male and 47.2 percent female according to the census conducted in 1996, it was 54.0 percent male and 46.0 percent female in the 2006 census.

In the following years, the total population continued to increase, and this increase was higher for men than for women.

According to the projection population for 2021, the male ratio of the population is 54.4 percent, the female ratio is 45.6 percent, and the sex ratio is 119.2 (men per 100 females).

When the distribution of broad age groups in the total population is examined, it was seen that the ratio of the population in the “0-14 age group” to the total population decreased from 29.5 percent to 13.7 percent in 2021 compared to 1978, and the “15-64 age group”, which is called the “working age population” increased from 60.9 percent to 76.5%.

Despite the increase in the number of births in the country over the years, a decrease was observed in the Crude Birth Rate and Total Fertility Rate indicators due to the population structure.

According to the records of 1977, while the total number of births was 2923 in the statistical annals, this number was determined as 3614 for 2021. When the number of births in 1977 and 2021 was examined, it was seen that there was an increase of 23.6% (3614/2923). The crude birth rate, which was calculated as 20.20 (per thousand) in 1977, was calculated as 9.34 (per thousand) in 2021.

It was observed that the fertility rate decreased by showing a fluctuating change from 1977 to 1997, and since 1998, it has been below the fertility renewal level of 2.00.

Looking at the time-varying graph of the median age of being a mother and father from 1977 to 2021, it was seen that people became parents at a later age compared to previous years. It was determined that the age of fatherhood, which was 28.6 in 1977, increased to 34.0 in 2021, and the age of motherhood increased from 25.3 to 30.8 in 2021.

When we look at the death statistics, it was seen that although there were less than 300 deaths per year in the data of the first years (between 1977-1981), the Crude Death Rates calculated in those years were around 10 per thousand. In 2021, when the number of deaths was 1693, the Crude Death Rate (per thousand) was calculated as 4.4.

It has been observed that infant mortality rates have increased significantly in the last three years. While there were 8 babies who died before completing the age of one (0 years old) in 2019, it was seen that this number reached 26 in 2021.

It was calculated that the Infant Mortality Rate increased from 2.1 to 7.2 in the same years (per thousand). When examined in detail periodically, it was seen that the highest infant mortality was in the Neonatal (0-27 days) period.

It has been observed that life expectancy at birth, which can be expressed as the average life expectancy of a baby born at the age of zero, included in the Life Tables prepared every year, has increased according to the estimates in the life tables created after the 2011 census, and it was 83.1 years for women and 79 years for men in 2021. .

When the number of deaths by gender is examined, it has been determined that the total number of deaths has increased over the years and that the number of deaths for men is higher than for women.

When the causes of death are examined in detail, old age and so on between 1996-2005. Although the causes of death due to Symptoms and Abnormal Clinical and Laboratory Findings, in which deaths are grouped, were higher than the causes of death due to circulatory system diseases. It was seen that deaths due to circulatory system diseases were the primary cause of death in the country in general.

According to the registration information of the causes of death in the last 3 years, in 2021, cardiovascular diseases etc. The cause of death due to the circulatory system, which covers the causes of death, ranked first with 46.4 percent.

While deaths from neoplasms, including cancer-related deaths, take the second place with 12.3 percent; with the increase in deaths due to coronavirus, it was seen that Certain Infectious and Parasitic Diseases ranked third with 11 percent.

It was observed that the number of marriages of individuals showed a fluctuating change over the years, but remained in similar intervals, while the number of divorces showed a significant increase over the years.

While the number of marriages was around 1200 in both 1977 and 2021, the number of divorces, which was 180 in 1977, increased by approximately 5 times to 895 in 2021.

The age at marriage has increased over the years. The average age at marriage for women, which was 22.8 in 1977, reached 31.5 in 2021. The average age at marriage for men increased from 27.2 to 34.5.

While the highest divorce rate was in Famagusta in 1977, the highest rate was seen in Nicosia in 2021.
