Daniil Medvedev after the Open 13 Provence final

Top seed Daniil Medvedev was crowned champion at the Open 13 Provence in Marseille after defeating Pierre-Hugues Herbert in three sets.

The Russian claimed his 10th ATP Tour title as he saw off unseeded Frenchman Herbert 6-4 6-7 (4) 6-4 after two hours and 11 minutes.

Medvedev registered 13 aces and saved four of the five break points he faced against Herbert, who had beaten three seeds in Kei Nishikori, Stefanos Tsitsipas – the 2019 and 2020 champion – and Ugo Humbert en route to the final.
Medvedev’s triumph comes ahead of him rising a place to world number two on Monday, overtaking Rafael Nadal.
The ATP Finals winner and Australian Open runner-up will become the first player outside the ‘big four’ of Roger Federer, Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray to occupy the number two spot since Lleyton Hewitt in 2005.
Home favourite Cristian Garin won the Chile Dove+ Men Care Open with a 6-4 6-7 (3) 7-5 victory over Argentina’s Facundo Bagnis in Santiago.
The top-seeded world number 22, claiming his fifth ATP Tour trophy, is the first Chilean player to win at a home event in 12 years.
In a Sunday start to the main draw at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, Kei Nishikori reached round two with a 3-6 6-3 6-4 win over American Reilly Opelka.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga withdrew due to injury at 3-3 in the first set against Tunisia’s Malek Jaziri, whose fellow wild card Aslan Karatsev of Russia beat Egor Gerasimov 6-4 6-4 to set up a clash with Britain’s Dan Evans.
