Millions gone as 16 shops razed in Osun fire

It was a sad moment for shop owners and residents of Oke-Popo along Palace square in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, as fire razed 16 shops in the early hours of Thursday.

A shop owner, Lawal Sulaiman, said that the fire started from one of the shops and extended to 15 others, destroying properties worth millions of Naira.

He said, “The fire started from a shop and spread to other shops before firefighters arrived. It razed the 16 shops.

“It destroyed goods worth millions of naira but no casualties recorded.”

Confirming the incident, the State Administrative Officer of the Fire service, Fatai Aremu said the office got a report of the fire and dispatched men to the area.

He added that the operatives battled the inferno for hours before they eventually put out the fire.

He also said about 10  shops were razed in the inferno, adding that the cause of the incident was yet to be ascertained.
