No fewer than 43 inmates at the Kuje Medium Prison, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja have passed the West African Examination Council (WAEC) examination while still serving their terms. The inmates, who sat for the November/December WAEC examinations in 2013, received their West African Examination Council (WAEC) statement of results at a ceremony organised by the FCT command of the Nigeria Prisons Service in collaboration with NUGA Best, a non-governmental organisation. The Controller of Prisons, FCT command, Kasali Yusuf, said the Nigerian Prisons authority chose the model of reformation, rehabilitation and re-integration to transform inmates through the use of information and counselling, Leadership reports. Yusuf urged inmates to follow suit and exploit the free education opportunity available to them in the prisons, adding the inmates can study up to the tertiary level. “We are proud that an inmate can start primary to university education in Kuje with the opening of a centre for the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) study centre in the prison. “About 33 inmates have gained admission into various degree programmes at NOUN with the first set in 200 hundred level now,” Yusuf said. He also thanked the director of NUGA Best, Pastor Hilary Chukwuma Akpu, for the program.
