Deputy police chief commits suicide during suspension operation after failed coup attempt

A deputy police chief has committed suicide during a police suspension
operation as a part of the nationwide move against those suspected of
having links to the July 15 failed coup attempt.

A total of 900 police officers were suspended in Ankara
and investigations were launched into them on suspicion they had links
to the Fethullahist Terrorist Organization/Parallel State Structure
(FETÖ/PDY), which the government says masterminded the failed coup
attempt.

The deputy police chief, identified as Mutlu Ç.,
committed suicide with his gun, after he had been suspended in Ankara’s
Güdül district.

Mutlu Ç. was taken to hospital, but succumbed to his wounds.

Elsewhere,
a district governor, who had been suspended from duty as a part of the
investigations, committed suicide late on July 19 in the Aegean province
of Manisa.

Ahmetli District Governor Necmi Akman reportedly used
the gun of his bodyguard police officer to fire a single shot at his
head in his home residence.

He was immediately taken to the
Ahmetli State Hospital and was later transferred to the nearby Turgutlu
State Hospital, where he subsequently succumbed to his injuries.

Akman was suspended from his duty along with two other district governors on July 18. He had been in office for two years.

Akman’s bodyguard police officer was also detained after the incident.

An investigation into the incident was ongoing.
