Situated on the seafront of Beidaihe, a resort district in Qinhuangdao, Hebei province, this library first opened its doors around China’s Labor Holiday. Standing alone amid a virtually deserted beach, “the world’s loneliest library” has become a hot topic since pictures of the facility were posted online.

Designed by an architect named Dong Gong, the 450-square-meter library creates the perfect atmosphere for readers who do no want to be disturbed by the outdoor world (at least for now). Visitors can enjoy a lovely view of the sea through the water-facing wall, made entirely of windows, and those looking to find even more inner peace can wander over to the meditation room near the reading lounge.

There’s no direct public transportation to reach the three-story library, according to Xinhua. Its developer said in a statement that “we haven’t officially announced its opening to the public, so we haven’t released all the details to media, but we will let everyone know when it is fully opened”.

Dong said that his vision was for “people to have a space that could let them embrace the beauty of sea when they read a book.”
