Police in Kamisu, Ibaraki Prefecture, said Friday they have arrested a
36-year-old woman on suspicion of attempting to kill her 2-month-old
daughter.

According to police, Atsue Hanatsuka strangled her daughter at their
apartment at around 11 a.m. on Thursday and then contacted police, Fuji

Police rushed to the apartment and found the baby unconscious but
still alive. She was taken to hospital where she remained in a serious

Hanatsuka was quoted by police as saying she choked her child because
she wouldn’t stop crying and she just wanted some peace and quiet.
