Two children have died along with hundreds of birds while they were watching people flying kites connected to glass coated strings, according to police in India.

Delhi police said that 3-year-old Saanchi Goyal and Harry, 4, were looking out of the sunroof of their parents’ car on Monday, as people were flying kites in celebration of Independence Day.

Suddenly, they were hit by the glass coated kite string, and their throats were slit. They died at the scene while sitting in their father’s lap.

22-year-old Zafar Khan also died as a result of a slit throat when he was hit by a glass coated kite string while riding his bike.

Hundreds of birds died as a result of being hit by glass coated kite strings. Five hundred birds were brought to the Charity Birds Hospital, after they suffered injuries from glass coated kite strings.

It is illegal to fly kites connected to glass coated strings.

Violators face up to five years in prison. People fly kites with sharp string in order to cut their competitor’s kites.
