Sao Paulo have confirmed that coach Edgardo Bauza will leave the club in order to take up the vacant role at the Argentina national team.

The post had been empty since Gerardo Martino handed in his resignation shortly after the end of the 2016 Copa America.

And while official confirmation from the Argentine FA has yet to arrive, Sao Paulo revealed that the trainer was moving back to his home country.

“Sao Paulo announce that Edgardo Bauza has revealed he received and accepted on Monday evening an offer from the Argentine Football Association (AFA) to take over the national team,” a statement read.

“As a result, he will leave the post of coach of the Tricolor.

“Hired at the start of the season, Paton leaves the club after eight months of important work rebuilding the team.”

Bauza comes with a sterling record in South American football, having led both Liga de Quito and San Lorenzo to their first-ever Copa Libertadores triumphs, in 2008 and 2013 respectively.

The Rosario native had also taken Sao Paulo to the latter stages of this year’s Copa, only to fall in the semi-finals to eventual winners Sao Paulo.
