Wind wreaks havoc at Rio Olympics

The second full day of competition at the Rio Olympics broke bright and clear. And windy, very windy.

High gusts wreaked havoc on the early competition Sunday, forcing complete cancellation of the rowing events at Lagoa Stadium.

According to U.S. swimming coach Dave Marsh, wind had forced the dining hall in the athletes’ village to close.

In the beach volleyball stadium at Copacabana Beach, the weather turned minutes before the USA’s Lauren Fendrick and Brooke Sweat played in the second match of the day. Clouds rolled in and gusts picked up, blowing hard the length of the court.

The match went ahead as planned, but the first set was a sloppy one, with numerous serves sailing out and a host of unforced errors from both teams. The Americans eventually prevailed in that first set, 21-14, over Poland’s Kinga Kolosinska and Monika Brzostek.

At the tennis venue, the match at the main stadium began as planned, the rest of the courts were delayed. Dustin Brown of Germany and Thomaz Bellucci probably wished their match had been delayed as well. Conditions made for some comical tennis.
