A prison inmate was arrested on a charge of murder after allegedly stabbing a corrections officer who refused to give him a second plate of food, according to police in Alabama.

Monroeville police said that they have arrested Cleveland Cunningham, in connection with the stabbing death of 44-year-old Kenneth Bettis.

In court, Cunningham was initially charged with attempted murder, but the charge has since been upgraded to murder.

According to the police investigation, Cunningham became agitated after asking for another tray of food in the Holman Prison.

Cunningham is serving a 20 year prison sentence after being convicted of burglary. After Bettis refused to give Cunningham a second tray of food, the inmate stabbed the officer.

Bettis was taken to the University of South Alabama Hospital in Mobile, where he died of his injuries on Friday.
