Police in Denmark charge man with blasphemy after being seen burning Quran on Facebook video

A man in Denmark, is facing a charge of blasphemy after publicizing a video, showing him burning a copy of the Quran, a book that is revered by Muslims throughout the world, according to officials.

The 42-year-old man of Viborg, who was not identified, is the first person to be charged with blasphemy in the past 46 years.

The last time someone has been convicted of blasphemy was 71 years ago.

Under clause 140, any person who publicly insults or degrades religious doctrines or worship, can get a four months in prison or a fine.

According to the police investigation, the 42-year-old man uploaded the video to a Facebook group called “Yes to freedom – no to Islam.”

The video shows the man lighting the Quran on fire. In the description of the video, the man wrote: “Consider your neighbors, it stinks when it burns.”

Prosecutor Jan Reckendorf said that he believes the man made a mockery of religion, promoting the charge of blasphemy.
