Two dead, many injured as truck falls off Ojuelegba bridge

Two persons were on Tuesday night killed and many others injured after a containerised truck fell off Ojuelegba Bridge in Lagos.

The incident, which occurred around 8:30pm, brought to four, the number of times heavy duty vehicles had fallen off that bridge in two years.

The truck fell on a commercial bus and two other private cars. The truck was said to have veered off its track before tumbling and crushing the vehicles.

Although witnesses said several persons were killed in the accident, emergency workers put death toll at two.

They blamed other articulated vehicles parked on the bridge for the misfortune, noting that the driver was trying to navigate a narrow path to avoid colliding with other motorists in the lane left for moving vehicles.

Confirming the incident, the General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Adesina Tiamiyu said two persons have been recovered dead.

He said: “So far, we have recovered two dead bodies. Two people were critically injured and moved to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital  (LUTH), while others sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

“We are currently clearing the road. We have removed two vehicles and there were empty.”
