The daughter of Chief MKO Abiola, Hafsat Abiola-Costello, on Wednesday, said her father did not betray Nigerians and that the spirit of June 12 should be expected in the current administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

She said this at the Eagle Square venue of the first National Democracy Day celebration in Abuja during an interview with our correspondents.

She said, “Today is the fulfillment of my father’s vision. He trusted the Nigerian people that they would always defend him.

“He could not betray them and today we could see that Nigerians have not betrayed MKO Abiola.

“President Buhari made this day Democracy Day which should have been done since 1999. This shows that the spirit of June 12 is what we should expect in this administration.”

Also at the venue, former Akwa Ibom State governor, Godswill Akpabio, said Nigerians should be part of what President Buhari did by recognising June 12 as National Democracy Day in Nigeria.

“This shows that the sacrifice of MKO Abiola for democracy and the unity of this country is not a waste. We should be proud of Buhari for doing this,” he said.
