Cyprus Turkish Public Officials Union (KTAMS) announced that the hunger limit for a family of four is 9 thousand 841 TL and stated that the difference between the minimum wage and the hunger limit has increased to 1,241 TL.
In the statement made by the union, it was stated that the report on the hunger limit was prepared by taking into account the nutritional pattern required for a healthy nutrition of a family of 4, obtained from the Inpatient Treatment Institutions Department of the Ministry of Health, and the prices sent to the union by the Statistical Institute.
In the study of the union, the amount of compulsory food expenditure that an adult woman should make in order to eat healthy is 83.50 TL per day, 2 thousand 505 per month; 88.07 TL per day for an adult male, 2 thousand 642.10 TL per day; 93.41 TL per day for children aged 15-19, 2 thousand 802.30 TL per month; 63.05 TL per day for children aged 4-6, thousand per month It was determined as 1 thousand 891.50 TL.
KTAMS President Güven Bengihan stated that the monthly food expenditure (hunger limit) required for a family of four to be healthy, balanced and adequately fed was announced as 9 thousand 841 TL, and that despite the latest increase, the minimum wage remained below the hunger limit.
Bengihan said:
“According to the official figures of the Statistical Institute, inflation was 3.08 percent in September of 2022, 18.88 percent in the last three months (July, August, September), 75.64 percent in the last 9 months, and 120.32 percent in a year. Especially the high rate hikes in electricity, fuel, bottled gas, bread, milk and dairy products have almost bent the back of the people.
Despite the insistent demands of our unions, the minimum wage was increased by 41 percent in the first six months of 2022, despite the fact that the cost of living was 56.76 percent.
Bengihan emphasized that their demands are to make legal arrangements to increase the cost of living to the minimum wage, to update the minimum wage determination criteria and to change the structure of the Minimum Wage Determination Commission.
KTAMS President Bengihan stated that the legal regulation that will enable the private sector to unionize should be sent to the parliament as soon as possible in order to prevent the exploitation of private sector employees by leaving them at the mercy of the bosses.
