On Sunday, a cycling competition in Qinghai did not end as expected
after a man strolled across the road right into the path of a huge pack
of cyclists about 3km from the finish line.
The massive crash occurred during the first stage of the Tour of
Qinghai Lake 2016 as a large number of the cyclists failed to dodge the
jaywalker and got caught up in huge pileup. Several of the athletes were
injured and sent to a local hospital. The cyclists who weren’t involved
in the incident went on to finish the race.
Local police have arrested the man responsible for the crash.
Somehow, he was not seriously injured. Witnesses believe that he is
mentally ill.
Chinese netizens on Weibo
reacted to the shocking footage in different ways. “What a shame to our
country,” some web users wrote, while others mocked him by saying “at
least he is using the crossroads and isn’t a jaywalker.” Others
expressed sympathy for the man, “I heard that the man is mentally ill.
Security should have stepped up to prevent this from happening,” one
netizen wrote.
